Science is like a horse, not a cow; don't worship it, feed it.

Nobody cares for the woods anymore.

Here I am, finally writing something after almost 9 months. Its like being born again (please notice the humour). Right now I am in Bombay on vacation. Back home at last after a long time. As I sit here racking my brains about what to write, I keep thinking about the last 6 months and the month that is to follow. And I wonder...

Froggin'

Went on a short weekend field trip with my classmates to a place called Magra near Mussorie. The purpose of the trip was to survey the amphibian fauna of that area. The above mentioned place has a perennial stream flowing through it. This in herpetological parlance means a gold mine. The surrounding forest was awesome, undisturbed sub-tropical evergreeen forest. Laid a transect in the morning and walked the transect at night, our torch-beams bobbing wildly as we stumbled, slipping and sliding along the stream bed. The water was freezing and after some time it was as if my toes weren't there. Found many croakers, some BIG ones, more like the size of bandicoots. The high point was the discovery of a frog species which previously had not been reported from the state of Uttranchal. Elation set in that still hasn't worn off. Well, life throws up surprises(not the nasty ones) when you least expect them. Hasn't it always been like that?

Metamorphosis

Hostel life's a bitch. It changes you in every possible way. But the scariest thing is that it makes all your predatory instincts come to the fore. You also start feeling deprived with respect to certain aspects of life. You start thinking about things which you wouldn't even dream of in ordinary circumstances. You start imagining of implausible scenarios with you in the thick of things, like something straight out of a Fredrick Forsythe novel. It is almost surreal. More on this later.
